Technical analysis is a trading discipline employed to evaluate investments and identify trading opportunities by analyzing statistical trends gathered from trading activity, such as price movement and volume. Unlike fundamental analysts, who attempt to evaluate a security's intrinsic value, technical analysts focus on patterns of price movements, trading signals and various other analytical charting tools to evaluate a security's strength or weakness.
Personally, I like to divide technical analysis into two distinct parts:
Analysis by chart reading
All other ways of performing technical analysis.
What do I mean by chart reading? Chart reading goes beyond just pattern analysis. A good chart reader learns to literally "read" the chart. He learns to recognize thrust, direction of momentum, volatility, etc., simply using his/her eyes, to assess what is really happening in the market. Chart reading enables you to see what you need to know before it shows up on an indicator. Chart reading also enables you to "feel" what an indicator can never transmit to you. When you can read a chart, you will be able to cooperate and be in step with the price action.
I can't go into all of chart reading here, but I include chart reading in my private tutoring sessions, especially going deep into chart reading, if requested to do so.
